We have posted our hopes and dreams, created our rules and have invited some wonderful guests to help kick-off our insect study and our writer’s workshop.
Linda Urban, published children’s author and parent of a second grader and a fifth grader in our school, came to share her techniques for writing. She brought her book Mouse was Mad and showed us how she started with an idea and kept adding details and making changes until it was the best that it could be. We are so fortunate that she will be joining us regularly for our writing time on Fridays.
Another new activity this week is “password”. Before students enter the classroom they read the letter of the day and have a choice of how to practice making the letter. The choices are: writing in sand, writing with sponges on chalkboards, or using wooden pieces to create the letter. After trying out these techniques they write in their letter journal.
This song helps them remember where to start their letters
In math we have introduced the counting jar where students guess and count the number of objects, recreate that number with other objects, and write the amount by either drawing it, using tally marks, or forming the numeral. We have also been describing objects by noticing their attributes. Ask your child how to play the button game.
