First Grade Archery!

This week during Eco we drew upon the excitement of last weeks bow making enthusiasm! So today was all about archery. We first talked about the safety implications and how they could be used safely. Once we got outside we went in search of golden rod to make our arrows out of. After a snack by the fire we split up into groups. One group worked on a target zone to practice using our bow and arrows, another worked on roasting sticks for a project next week and the rest worked on constructing their bows.

Once all the work was finished it was time to try out our bow and arrows. The children learned quickly it was not as easy as they thought. One student quickly discovered he needed a notch at the end of the arrow to hold it in the string. They figured out you have to pull the sting back as far back as you can to get it to go farther. We are going to continue our work next week as they still have much experimenting and tweaking to make their bows functional! What great problem solving!  We will be having a special ECO next week!
We foraged for golden rod sticks to make our arrows out of.
