On Thursday all students in the school had a chance to have visitors come to their classroom and read a story or do an activity that broadened their understanding of different cultures.
We had Rose and John come to us from Calais. Rose read us a book about a boy spending his summers with his grandmother in New York City. His family was originally from Puerto Rico and his grandmother lived in El Barrio which is an ethnic neighborhood. The people who lived there mostly spoke Spanish, enjoyed food from their homeland and listened to music that made them think of their special island.
After this story was read students had a chance to ask lots of questions and listen to John play a tune on his harmonica. These activities elicited lots of conversations about different cultures.
